Indiana steel company gets hours, equipment exemptions for on-site coil transport
ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor received the exemptions from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration after it requested them in March. The company’s internal logistics drivers can now operate up to 16 consecutive hours in a work day and return to work with a minimum of eight hours off-duty when necessary.

Senate skips hours fix in bill aimed at preventing government shutdown
Reports indicated lawmakers would use the bill to fix a “legislative glitch” initiated last December that could remove the 34-hour restart from hours-of-service regulations, meaning truckers could not use a restart if they wanted. But the Senate bill, made public Thursday, includes no such fix.

Court seems to lean toward keeping ELD mandate in place, trucking attorney says
“The [three-judge] panel was very suspect of the arguments that OOIDA was making and seemed to be much more in favor of the attorneys of the agency,” Scopelitis attorney Tim Wiseman said of the oral arguments made in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals on Sept. 13. OOIDA filed a suit this year seeking to overturn the agency’s ELD mandate.

The agencies did not formally propose a speed to which trucks should be limited, but they did issue analysis on three speeds: 60 mph, 65 mph and 68 mph.

Tanker group petitions DOT about California meal, rest break requirements for hazmat carriers
The National Tank Truck Carriers says California’s rules, which entitles drivers to paid 30-minute meal break periods after five and 10 hours of work, prohibits carriers from requiring an employee to work during these breaks, violating best practices and load attendance requirements for hazmat haulers, the group says.
