00:00 In this week’s CCJ Tech Shorts, we’ll take a look at a partnership that aims to improve road safety with data insights, a telematics integration and a non-profit’s use of technology to recruit future truckers.

00:25 The Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI), in collaboration with Altitude by Geotab, has been selected by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Freight Management to lead a key initiative aimed at improving truck safety on U.S. highways.

An estimated 29,135 fatalities occurred due to truck accidents in the first nine months of 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is estimated that approximately one in three long-haul truck drivers will face a serious accident over the course of their career, costing trucking companies hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Improving safety and mobility on U.S. highways requires high-quality data insights to inform effective solutions.

This project will focus on identifying high-risk road segments, leveraging the institute’s transportation research expertise and Geotab's aggregated and anonymized commercial truck telematics data, providing actionable insights needed to proactively address roadway safety challenges.

The telematics data Altitude provides will enable the institute to perform in-depth analyses of potential crash hazards, traffic patterns and roadway risk factors. This data will help identify high-risk roadway segments, analyze traffic patterns, and assess potential hazards. The findings will enable transportation agencies, state departments, and industry partners to implement measures that reduce accidents and enhance freight mobility nationwide.

01:49 Commercial trucking telematics provider Fleetilla has transitioned to the Road Ready brand. Fleetilla, which was acquired by Road Ready parent company Clarience Technologies in early 2022, will now see its products fully integrated into Road Ready, an advanced trailer telematics solutions provider.

Clarience Technologies said uniting the brands under the Road Ready name expands their ability to provide a wider range of fleets with advanced monitoring solutions that address the critical needs of fleet management worldwide, helping fleets of all types and sizes optimize operations.

02:23 Women in Trucking, the non-profit that supports female employment in the trucking industry, is rolling its tech-laden driver ambassador expo trailer out for tours available for female students in logistics, career choice and trucking programs at Patterson High School in California later this week.

The trailer, named WITney after the organization, is a state-of-the-art mobile recruiting and learning unit designed to raise awareness about careers for women in the trucking industry, promote equality, and inspire the next generation of industry leaders.

It includes touchscreen monitors and videos with interactive displays that showcase the history and future of women in trucking and a driving simulator that gives participants a feel for maneuvering a tractor-trailer through simulated traffic. It also includes a clothing and gear display and an educational timeline.
